Update 2: Nier Automata director Yoko Taro tweeted about the secret church, and her response is just as provocative as fans have come to expect from the developer.
“Do you want to know my insight?” Taro asks (opens in a new tab). “In that case, you can find the answer on my Twitter profile. Thank you.”
For those of you who are curious, Taro’s Twitter profile (opens in a new tab) says this: “I can’t respond to any products. Please ask the editor. I can’t respond in DM except for business and knowledge.”
We, for the record, asked publisher Square Enix about the mysterious church. We will provide another update if we learn more.
Update: The mystery around the secret church in Nier Automata deepens, as the player who discovered it provided more footage, modders started digging deeper, and the game developers provided some vague commentary.
The new images provided by sadfutago on Reddit (opens in a new tab) lasts almost four minutes and shows A2 continuing down the winding hallway leading to the nave of the church. A brief cutscene plays, highlighting a dummy on an altar with a Moon Teardrop flower sprouting out of her chest and an invincible figure shrouded in black voxels.
Right after the cutscene, A2 and his pod have a brief exchange. A2 says “Whoa. What is that?” The pod responds “Unknown”. A2 then says “You are useless.” (This conversation is a pretty good metaphor for where the community is right now.) sadfutago notes (opens in a new tab) that they had to “delete my Terraria and Far Cry 4” to save the video.
Members of the modding community have reached out to sadfutago for more details. Apparently this footage was captured on a French-Canadian PS4 copy of the game that was never updated. Now players are scrambling to test different versions of the game to retrace sadfutago’s steps and see if they can open that secret door.
“So far, we have found no evidence in the assets that this exists, OTHER than the endgame tower itself,” modder xxk_ notes in a Reddit post. (opens in a new tab). xxk_ adds that “If this is a mod, it would be the first time someone did something like this, and NO ONE else knows how to do custom doors as seen in the video – it would be a relatively HUGE undertaking for a single individual to accomplish with various modding breakthroughs.”
Meanwhile, Nier Automata producer Yosuke Saito tweeted. He first sent a Tweeter (opens in a new tab) in English saying “eternal mystery”. Then one in Japanese, translated as aitaïkimochi (opens in a new tab), to say “That sounds like something Yoko Taro would do. Lol.” Then came a self-translated Tweeter (opens in a new tab) saying “First of all, calm down and make a reservation here”, pointing to a link for pre-orders for the upcoming Switch port of Nier Automata.
On this last point, some fans are increasingly convinced (opens in a new tab) that this is some sort of viral marketing stunt for the Switch port, speculating that the church might actually be a Switch-exclusive area and that the whole mystery is just a way to lure people in. interest of the public.
Each new possibility seems just as strange as the last, and regardless of the truth, it remains fascinating to watch the story unfold.
Original story: A Nier Automata player has stumbled across what appears to be a never-before-seen secret door, and the sudden revelation has the community “in shambles”.
A month ago, a Reddit user called sadfutago posted a message (opens in a new tab) asking “how do I get to the church?” Apparently, this player had opened a door in the copied town leading inside a church-style building and was trying to figure out how to get inside. The problem was that as far as the rest of the community was concerned, such a door did not exist.
Shortly after, sadfutago provided a handful of screenshots (opens in a new tab) and a little video (opens in a new tab) showing the way to the mysterious door. Some community members were wary of a fake, pointing to the fact that the clip ended right after the door opened. At that time, sadfutago replied “I didn’t want to record too much because my mother told me not to take up space.”
Nothing more happened for a month, until today when sadfutago posted a longer clip (opens in a new tab) showing what’s behind the door, including custom items and animations that don’t seem to have any precedent elsewhere in the game.
Someone randomly posted a video to the Nier Automata subreddit showing that they had found a secret room in the copied city. So far no one else has figured out how they managed to make this secret door appear. Literally 1 person on earth has accessed this room and we are blown away pic.twitter.com/g7W4JxiNDgJuly 25, 2022
As a modder and dataminer Lance McDonald says it (opens in a new tab)“The community is shocked by this discovery.”
Members of the Nier Automata modding community say it’s unlikely this area was created through mods, as new maps complete with unique animations go far beyond what modders’ tools are. able to create today.
This leaves us with three possibilities. Either someone is pulling an elaborate prank by creating a Nier Automata mod far beyond what other modders have made possible, pulling an even more elaborate prank by perfectly animating a fake video of the game, or this gate is really a new discovery that has somehow gone unnoticed in the five years since the game’s launch. Regardless of the truth, it’s a remarkable mystery.
Nier Automata is about to change in October, if you’re looking for a way to extract undiscovered mysteries on the go.
