If you were looking to finally get into VR this year, Amazon Prime Day is the best time to finally take the leap into the metaverse. Surprisingly, the reason isn’t because of many – there are several, so keep an eye glued to our Oculus Quest 2 Prime Day live blog (opens in a new tab).
Rather, it’s because Meta finally announced that it would no longer need a Facebook account to use an Oculus Quest 2. (opens in a new tab) (now known as Meta Quest 2).
It’s true! Starting this August, you will no longer need a Facebook account to use a Quest 2. Since the launch of the Quest 2, Meta has required the use of an active Facebook account to play games , apps or even just to use the headset at all.
While this made logging in and setup easier if you were already a Facebook user, having a Facebook account tied to a VR headset turned out to be a huge hassle for many people. In many cases, people have been banned from Facebook (opens in a new tab) – whether for a legitimate reason or not – rendering Quest 2 pointless.
Solve the problem
When Meta flips the switch in August and changes the rules, you’ll need to sign up for a new Meta account. Instead of your personal Facebook account, you’ll be using a separate Meta account that’s only designed for one thing right now: letting you pay for stuff in the metaverse.
What it means to buy the best Quest 2 games (opens in a new tab), or buying clothes for your Horizon Worlds avatar is entirely up to you. You will simply use your Meta account to do so.
Because this account is completely separate from your social media feed — and, in fact, you can choose never to link your Facebook or Instagram accounts to it — it will be free from the issues that have arisen when people have had their accounts banned. Facebook accounts.
When you create a Meta account, you also create a Meta Horizon profile which will include your name, username, and the avatar that will represent you in Meta’s virtual spaces. Let this be how you watch a virtual concert (opens in a new tab) or when playing games with friends in Horizon worlds, your avatar is designed to be the character you want to be.
Why Prime Day?
Prime Day is one of the best days of the year to get deals on just about anything you’d typically order from Amazon. Even though the Quest 2 itself isn’t on sale, you’re almost guaranteed to get some of the best Quest 2 accessories out there. (opens in a new tab) to an agreement.
Since the Quest 2 is so affordable, it’s important to choose these accessories to get the full headset experience. The default strap, for example, is pretty thin on its own, but won’t feel comfortable during long gaming sessions. You’ll want to get a better Quest 2 headband (opens in a new tab) for that.
Likewise, the controllers are good enough on their own, but feel even better with a great alternative to the Quest 2 wrist strap. (opens in a new tab). Our favorites add a wrist strap that will allow you to let go of the controller completely without it falling out of your hand. This is important to make throwing in VR feel more natural and to prevent this controller from flying into a wall or TV if you forget to tighten the straps enough.
Meta Quest 2
There’s nothing like a Meta Quest 2. This standalone VR headset works like a console, so you don’t need a PC or smartphone to power the experience. Put it down and enjoy great games and VR experiences every time.
